In 2024/2025 Ysgol Afon Wen pupils began their journey with a range of career and work related experiences. Take a look at the highlights below. We are very much looking forward to adding to this, this year in 2025/2026.
Year 8 pupils have been exploring opportunities and widening their horizons by taking part in an exciting careers carousel event. This was designed to broaden their understanding of the world of work and spark curiosity about future possibilities. In small groups, pupils rotated between a variety of employer stations, including representatives from the police, Specsavers, and local construction companies.
We’re proud of how engaged and respectful our pupils were throughout the event. Experiences like this are key to building confidence, raising aspirations, and helping young people make informed choices as they start thinking about their next steps.
What does it mean to be Welsh?
The topic aimed to teach pupils in our Activate Phase about their community, Wales and the wider world.
Pupils researched craft that was significant to Wales. Once pupils carried out their research, they made Welsh Crafts, conducted market research and held a Craft Fair for their parents and the community. Pupils explored this opportunity through a meaningful experience in learning and entrepreneurship.
Pupils in Nursery spent a morning learning about jobs. They spoke to some parents about what their jobs were and what they enjoyed about them. They finished the morning off by thinking about what jobs they might like to do when they grow up. This activity helped our youngest pupils to begin developing an understanding of the purpose of work in life for themselves and society as a whole.
Year 10 completed a week of work experience in June. The whole year group took part whether that was by securing an external placement or an internal placement in the school. All pupils found this a very rewarding experience which helped them to develop resilience and the ability to be adaptable in response to challenges, choices and responsibilities of work and life.

Year 11 RCT Job Fair September 2025
Our Year 11 pupils recently had the exciting opportunity to attend the RCT Jobs Fair, where they engaged with over 50 employers from a wide range of industries. The event provided a valuable insight into potential career paths and future opportunities, sparking meaningful conversations about life beyond school. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with many expressing in their evaluations that they now have a clearer idea of the industries they’d like to pursue after leaving school. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they explored real-world possibilities.
